Funding scientists

 

The Royal Society runs a series of schemes that enhance the UK science base and fosters collaboration between UK based and overseas scientists.

Fellowships

Fellowships enable talented young scientists to build independent careers by providing salaries, research expenses and a range of other non-financial support.

Research Professorships During 2010 the Royal Society will be celebrating its 350th Anniversary. As part of the celebrations we will be appointing four Royal Society 2010 Anniversary Research Professorships. These prestigious posts provide long-term support for world-class scientists of outstanding achievement and promise, allowing them to focus on research and collaboration.




 

 

UK Grants

Royal Society grants provide a range of UK-based support for non-salary purposes:

Royal Society Wolfson laboratory refurbishment grants

The Royal Society Wolfson laboratory refurbishment grants provide up to £250,000 for the renovation and modernisation of university research laboratories.

Brian Mercer Awards for Innovation

Mercer Postdoctoral Grant
Awards for Innovation.

The Brian Mercer Awards for Innovation provide up to £250,000 to develop ideas, products or processes relating to the built environment, up to a stage where venture capital can be sought.

Research grants

Research grants offer up to £15,000 for equipment to support promising research in any discipline within the Society's remit.

Paul Instrument Fund

The Paul Instrument Fund enables the design, construction and maintenance of novel physical instruments needed for research in the physical sciences.

Dudley Stamp Memorial Fund

The Dudley Stamp Memorial Fund provides grants for young, postgraduate students engaged in full or part-time geography related research. The management of this fund has now been transferred to the Royal Geographical Society.

History of science grants

The Royal Society aims to promote scholarship and encourage research into the history of science and provides a number of different grant schemes.

Theo Murphy Blue Skies Awards

The Royal Society launches its new Theo Murphy Blue Skies Award which will provide funding for novel and transformative fundamental research.

International Grants

Our international grants programme enables high calibre UK scientists to initiate collaborations, exchange ideas, develop new skills and experience from the world's leading researchers:

Joint Projects

Joint Project grants provide two years' support to cover costs of exchanging staff involved in collaborative research between a UK and an overseas group.

Networking scheme

The networking scheme is aimed specifically at developing new and enduring partnerships between the UK and China, India and South Africa.  Grants are available for any field of science and technology and cover one to one meetings or small seminars/workshops.

The Leverhulme - Royal Society Africa Award

These awards are intended to encourage collaborative research projects on national priority areas between Ghanaian and Tanzanian research institutions and those in the UK. The aim is to assist in strengthening the research and training capacity in research institutions in Ghana and Tanzania through specific skills transfer to the African institutions, as part of a discrete collaborative research project with the UK  

International Travel Grants

The Royal Society's objectives include strengthening of UK science by providing support to excellent individuals to engage with the best science around the world as well as supporting science communication.  The International Travel Grant scheme aims to contribute to fulfilling this objective by supporting international collaborations and the participation of UK scientists in overseas conferences.
